PPP’s Seussical Springs Out of the Hat!

Take a mindful of imagination, sprinkle some color, add a dash of the strange and inventive, toss it all into a red and white striped hat, and what have you got? The Memphis and Mid-South premiere of Seussical the Musical, opening this week at the Poplar Pike Playhouse!

As one of the first non-professional theatres in the nation to produce this strikingly original hit, the Poplar Pike Playhouse is looking forward to introducing Germantown and Memphis theatergoers to a show new to the area. The show opens on May 6th and runs through May 22nd.

Written by Steven Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, the same Tony-winning team that penned Ragtime and Once On This Island, Seussical brings Dr. Seuss’ characters to life on the stage. The word is that audiences will be dazzled and amazed by the catchy tunes and endless imagination involved in Seussical.

The cast and crew of the PPP have spent the last six weeks inhabiting a “Seussian” world in an attempt to capture the innocence, depth, and fun of Dr. Seuss’ beloved books. A top-notch cast is complimented by an otherworldly set, eye-popping costumes, and props that look like they were sprung from the mind of Seuss himself.

“This isn’t a story just about The Cat in the Hat. This musical combines a lot of stories together so we all get the opportunity to play characters we have read about all our lives,” says senior Corinne Germain, who portrays Seuss’ infamous green miser, the Grinch.

Even though Hollywood has already produced recreations of these treasured classics, Seussical blends characters and events from several stories with the help of toe-tapping and moving music. This collaboration of wonderfully beautiful music and a full gamut of recognizable characters creates a one-of-a-kind experience. “This is a show for every person of every age,” comments Frank Bluestein, the show’s director. “It is fun, sophisticated, poignant, irreverent and beautiful all at the same time. Audiences are going to go wild over this show. I promise!”

Jeff Ingram, who leads the tiny planet of Who as its mayor, says, “Kids will love it! Parents will love it! Even those who have never read Dr. Seuss can identify with the characters and events in the show. I hope they have just as much fun watching it as we have performing it.”

“From the smallest of small to the tallest of tall,” this innovative musical seems destined to transport audiences right out of their seats and into the fanciful world of Dr. Seuss. If you have never seen a show at the Poplar Pike Playhouse, this seems for sure to be the one to get out and see. For PPP regulars, it looks like you are in for another Who-tastic hit!
