Joseph Gets Go-Go-Going on the PPP Stage!
This is part four in a four-part series about the Poplar Pike Playhouse’s upcoming
production Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
If you are looking to add more magnificent color to this spring, head over to the Poplar Pike Playhouse. The cast and crew of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat are painting the theatre red…and yellow and green and orange and blue! The talented, award-winning group of Thespians is once again poised to present a blockbuster musical designed to entertain the entire family. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat opens on the PPP stage on May 5th and runs through May 21st!
Joseph brings the Biblical story of Jacob’s favorite son and his eleven jealous brothers to vibrant life on stage. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, the dynamic duo behind such landmark musicals as Evita and Jesus Christ Superstar, penned Joseph early in their careers. The show brought them instant success and has gone on to become one of the most popular musicals of all time.
In anticipation of opening night, Joseph’s cast and crew at the Poplar Pike Playhouse have been busy at work adding the finishing touches to their modernized, upbeat spin of this classic Bible tale. “Dashes of humor, splashes of color and a cast of elaborate and lovable characters make Joseph an extremely popular play,” remarks Frank Bluestein, director of the show. Combining these elements and setting them to unforgettable music makes Joseph a unique experience audiences are guaranteed to not find anywhere else. “No matter how well you think you know Joseph’s story, this musical gives you so much more. The characters, the music… it puts you in a whole other world,” comments Ryan Sweeney, who portrays Joseph’s Elvis-inspired Pharaoh.
“We’re all really looking forward to opening night. There’s not just one aspect of the production that makes this show. It’s everything! There’s something for everyone to enjoy… the music, the characters, the costumes, the set… it’s all amazing,” says senior ensemble member Nina Galindez.
The actors aren’t the only members of the Playhouse team geared up for opening night. Staging Joseph requires an extensive production crew. From costumes to sound to props to lighting, the skilled theatre technicians are preparing to transport Mid-South audiences into Joseph’s world. They know that soon the intricately detailed orange and turquoise set will become home to a vast array of beloved characters, spectacular costumes and particular props. “There’s a lot of different technical aspects involved in this show, and we’ve been working long and hard to put them all together,” say stage manager Samantha Scherer.
With eight weeks of rehearsal under their belt, Joseph’s cast and crew are confident they have another Poplar Pike Playhouse smash hit on their hands. However, they are looking forward to opening night with the usual mix of anxiousness and anticipation. “We’ve rehearsed every day for weeks, and it all comes down to opening night. That’s the real test,” says Brian Berry, who plays Dan, one of Joseph’s meddlesome brothers. “But I feel the audiences will love it!”
